Fred Grevin asked, "do "aviation authorities" have much in the way of very long-lived records? By "very long-lived" I mean in excess of 30 years."

I used to work for Boeing -- and they have their feet firmly planted in the "aviation authority" swamp (if I'm correctly understanding your question). The retention on pretty much every record associated with the development, design and test of commercial aircraft is linked to something called the "type certificate", which is what the FAA issues for each new type of aircraft. As long as there's at least one of the aircraft flying, the records associated with it must be retained; the retention schedule shows "Life of Type Certificate" as the requirement. The DC-3 aircraft was first produced in the 1930s, and there are still DC-3s flying, so the records are still subject to the retention requirement.

That's a lot longer than 30 years.
