From the Verge: MIDI Turns 30: A revolutionary open music standard lives on.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/28/3923488/midi-turns-30-revolutionary-open-music-standard-lives-on

Given the challenges we have faced with obsolescence over the years, I
thought this was an extraordinary story of an operating standard that
continues to be used 30 years after its initial implementation. You can
literally connect a 30 year old midi device to a current system and have
the same functionality. Key to the longevity: "open source" (before open
source was a phrase), and no royalties for use.
