Carol,

You are correct. And that is exactly the point I'm trying to make to a
third party. I want to provide to a business unit that is embarking on
this type of project an itemized list of the many ways RIM is equipped to
help out.

Thanks,
Gary

Hi, Gary!

Isn't this part of the data gathering for your retention schedule? I
gather
this information as well as industry or organization-specific information
like whether a set of information is export controlled, is FOIA, security
or
privacy issues, etc. when I do a retention schedule as part of the basic
inventory process.

I don't call it a "data map" even though it ends up being the same thing,
in
part because the organizations I work with cannot believe that the
resources
to create it is so much less than what the law firms, etc. charge for such
a
product. It is also a much more usable format.

Records managers have always done something like this through the
retention
schedule inventory phase.

Best wishes,
Carol
