Carol,
You are so right - another new name for an established process.

Records and Information Management principles and practices are
applied regardless of the media used.  I believe it is important to
maintain "standard" terms for these RIM related processes to ensure
consistency throughout the organization's business processes.  Those who
choose to invent new terminology make things more complicated for the
business units.

The choice of words is interesting.  An inventory will focus on "what you
have" and the map will focus on a very fluid "where it is".  Locations can
and will change at any time if someone decides to reallocate the storage
space.  Storage gatekeepers (of all media) are responsible for knowing
where "it" is at all times.  Location data is not likely to be valid for
any significant period of time so it is important that the location data be
linked to the inventory data.
