Thank for this interesting article Laurie.

As I don't post regularly, I will just briefly say that I am Victoria
Lemieux, an Assistant Professor of Archival Studies at the School of
Library, Archival and Information Studies and Acting Director of the Media
and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre, The University of British Columbia.

This article is of interest to me as it touches on the subject of some of my
recent research, which proposes a framework for building accountability for
decision-making into mixed initiative cognitive systems (where decision
making is shared between human and machine) and "human-in-the-loop" robotics
(i.e. smart wheelchairs or robotics aid to medical surgeons). I have
written the attached paper for a conference on artificial intelligence (so
the discussion of the record is less nuanced than it would be if I had
written for a records management audience) but it will give you the picture
and an idea of my proposed framework - still under development.

One important point to note about my proposal is that I observe that the
theory of the record is not well-suited to the new age of cognitive systems
and robotics in that it focuses on representing and affording evidence of
transactions. I propose that we need to extend this theory to represent and
afford evidence of human and machine reasoning/cognitive processes, and
their interactions. This requires a theory of the record that pays much
closer attention to the human will, and how it can be represented.
Cognitive science theories can point us in the new direction I suggest we
must go. Using my proposed framework, I represent these processes in the
attached paper using visualization, as in a litigation or dispute-resolution
setting, invariably it will be humans, not machines who must interpret and
analyze the records of reasoning processes. Visualizations can be used to
help these analysts see important patterns in such data.

This is all part of a larger discourse about Trust in the Digital Era. As
in the past, records, I argue, will be at the heart of this.

I look forward to hearing from anyone on the list about this topic, and to
receiving additional examples and articles related to this theme.

All the best,
Vicki.

Subject: Interesting article about Risk Management advocates effective RIM
to reduce risk in product liability trials

Risk Management in Commercializing Robots By Stephen S. Wu, partner at Cooke

page 14:

"Finally, manufacturers can maximize their success in future product
liability trials by focusing today on effective records and information
management (RIM). RIM may not be on the short list of things manufacturers
consider when entering the robotics industry, but effective RIM may win
cases, while poor RIM may lose cases. . . ."
