GAR principles
The SUVCW is the successor to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). The GAR
was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army, U.S.
Navy, Marines and Revenue Cutter Service who served in the Civil War. The
GAR was dissolved in the 1950s when its last member died. The SUVCW, whose
members are direct descendants of those who served honorably in active
military service of the U.S. or state regiments between April 12, 1861, and
April 9, 1865, was founded in 1881 to preserve GAR principles and to
provide assistance to veterans. Local camps have activities to preserve
history and commemorate military service. The cemetery contacted SUVCW to
help with the marker project, and this has led to the dedication ceremony.
