An example of where TIFF's keeping-every-pixel would be valuable is radiography. A radiologist uses fine resolution to make diagnoses from subtle indicators on X-ray readouts. A format with long-term viability allows longitudinal comparisons: Has an abnormality significantly changed over a 10-, 20-, or 30- year period?
I'm sure there are many more examples of this. But no format is ideal for all applications. It's like Mr. Natural said to Flakey Foont, "At home or at work, the right tool for the right job."
