Good morning!

I am an MLIS student at Wayne State and recently joined this listserv as a way to learn a bit more about records management. I've mostly been lurking but have decided to come out of the shadows!

I didn't start library school thinking about records management. I've read that many of you have "fallen" into records management in a way that I may. A mentor at my current employer (who is a senior VP) has discussed with me the need for what I would call records management. He feels as though we don't manage the information that we have very well and often lose track of it. The concern is more "accessing company information" and less "preservation." This is a business/operational concern...as opposed to legal as our legal group already has standards surrounding document retention. Incidentally, we operate also within the health care industry and follow federal and state standards surrounding patient information.

In thinking about this problem, I have decided to take the intro to RIM course at Wayne State just to see if it sounds appealing.

To the crux of my question: I am interested in learning more about what records management is compared to knowledge management and enterprise content management. Are they slightly different flavors of the same thing or are they night and day different?

The first of what I know will be many questions... Thanks to all in advance!

Christine Flott
