I regard KM as the superset, and within it there are a number of
disciplines, overlapping significantly, including document management,
records, libraries, archives (which I separate from records), ECM etc. I
try not to use the term KM if I can help it, as it has been kidnapped by IT
sales and the conference speaker circuit, and has a reputation for being a
lot of hot air, or resulting in the purchase of a lot of very expensive and
marginally effective software. KM to me is a theoretical concept, a
collection of assorted tools and ideas, an abstract and very useful
framework within which we operate. I just don't talk about it often.

One obvious difference between the US and Australia in RM is what looks to
me from up here as an American focus on compliance and archiving. I hate
having to mention the word 'compliance' when explaining what I do, because
I want to help people manage their documents from the moment of creation,
not look after the subset of documents which are records, only from the
moment, long after creation, that someone decides they are records. That's
just warehousing.

Now, let's see if anyone responds . . .

(oh, and yes, I drifted into Records from the library world and then
software development, set up as a freelance consultant and quickly
discovered that not everyone had a library, but EVERYONE has documents.
It's called cash flow!)

Cheers

Glenn

These views are mine alone. They may or may not be those of any
previous or present employers or clients. I don't know. If I'd asked and
they'd agreed, I would have signed it "Harry Peck and Co and Glenn".
Or whatever. But I haven't, so I didn't.
