For those of you who have been following this event (PAK has posted several RAINbyte articles on it) - this is a perfect example of "hidden" costs of not following a records retention schedule. Putting the whole legal issue aside regarding not following County and State policy and procedures for the destruction of records, the costs incurred by the County for delegating staff to search through the landfill for boxes of discarded records and the potential FEMA reimbursement money lost due to the negative actions of the staff of the outgoing County Engineer are definite cost factors in determining the impact of this overall event. And, put simply, the event is - NOT FOLLOWING ESTABLISHED RECORDS DISPOSITION PROCEDURES. So for those of us who diligently research and develop efficient and legal RIM policies and procedures the implications are clear - AUDIT, AUDIT, AUDIT RIM activities after policy and procedures are approved and "implemented."

Investigators dig for buried county records
In connection with Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly's reported disposal of a large number of records from his and the county Prosecutor's offices earlier this week, personnel from the prosecutor's office reportedly were working Friday afternoon at the landfill near Nelsonville to exhume any records they could find.
