Law Firm Girds for New HIPAA Rule
The new HHS rule strengthens existing HIPAA privacy requirements. The rule
states that law firms and attorneys that have access to protected health
information (PHI) from individual patients must adopt more rigorous
safeguards to prevent the information from becoming public. Failure to do
so could cause a maximum penalty of $1.5 million per violation. The HHS
stated it would enforce the rule on September 23, 2013.
