Hi Gordy,

I can't cite a study on this, but we've been using the managed folders (i.e. big buckets) approach to managing email for about 1.5 years now, and here's the breakdown when we last analyzed the numbers:
- 13% of emails in the 18 Month bucket
- 23% in the 3Y bucket
- 28% in the 7Y bucket
- 18% in the 10Y bucket
- 2% in the legal hold order bucket
- 14% in the life of pipeline bucket
- 2% in the superseded/obsolete bucket

I'd consider the 18 Month bucket to be short term retention, and the 3Y, 7Y, and 10Y buckets combined to be medium-term retention. The 14% of email in the life of pipeline bucket was a bit of a surprise, but that number is skewed by our environmental team that--justifiably, keeps a lot of long-term records in an email format. The numbers are also skewed a little by the legal hold order and the superseded/obsolete buckets, where users can self-manage their email for as little as a few months, to over 10Y.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.
Earl
