One last thought  . . .  In response to the comment about using the paper records for disaster recovery.  I think this is a good idea.  During recovery from Hurricane Katrina, employees at Mississippi Power had access to needed electronic files, but had no way to print them (transmission lines and distribution lines).  While an event on the scale of Katrina may, hopefully, be an anomaly, it would give me pause to think long and hard before I disposed of the paper copies.

Thanks for all of the responses, and to you especially Fred for clarifying the 
preservation advantages of paper.  In my case I may be engaging in some 
education with the business unit on that point; laws and rules around land and 
environment tend to get stricter over time rather than less strict, and so 
anticipating that can be advantageous.
