Thanks for getting back to me.  It is part of our standard tape rotation that is used for backups.  Even if it was for only a year or 6 months we still have the issue of required tape rotation and the selective removal of records in a database backup file that would have to be reloaded and then the data removed. I don't see any way around this.

Let's start with the reasoning behind retaining backup tapes for three years.  Under what circumstances would an organization ever access disaster recovery/business resumption materials that are three years old?
