In addition to the Military Standard 105E (ISO 2859, ANSI/ASQC Z1.4) which Richard Medina cites, you also have:

1. The ISO 2859 series ("Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes"). ISO 2859-10:2006 provides a general introduction to acceptance sampling by attributes and provides a brief summary of the attribute sampling schemes and plans used in ISO 2859-1, ISO 2859-2, ISO 2859-3, ISO 2859-4 and ISO 2859-5, which describe specific types of attribute sampling systems. ISO 2859-10:2006 also provides guidance on the selection of the appropriate inspection system for use in a particular situation. (http://www.iso.org/iso/home/search.htm?qt=ISO+2859&sort=rel&type=simple&published=on),

and

2. AIIM TR34-1996, "Sampling Procedures for Inspection by Attributes of Images in Electronic Image Management (EIM) & Micrographics Systems" (USD 52.00 at http://www.techstreet.com/products/6842).

Note that the original version of the standard (MIL STD 105A) was issued in 1950. The last revision (MIL STD 105E) was issued in 1989, but canceled in 1991. The standard was adopted by the International Standards Organization as ISO 2859 (this from http://www.sqconline.com/about-acceptance-sampling).

There are at least TWO reasons for using one of these sampling systems.

The first is just not having to reinvent the wheel (unless you really, really like statistics, are good at it, and plan to stay with your organisation forever).

The second is sustaining any sort of challenge in legal or regulatory proceedings, as described in an earlier message by John Montana about the alteration of data by certain multi-function copiers.

Best regards,

Fred
