Structured data, you're talking about data in systems, correct? If so there
is always the question of what within the system is considered the record.
Is the output the record or is the data within the system the record? How
long does the data last? If the system is dynamic the data is always
changing. Often IT departments manage electronic systems and they don't
think in terms of record retention, they think either of backups or of
freeing up space as quickly as possible. Again, with any structured data
one must ask what is its function and what constitutes the record.

Subject: Statistics Search

Right now I'm doing queries on search engines and in the Recmgmt-l archives
to find out if any statistics exist on the storage volume of structured data
and, specifically, what % of that data might be retained past its retention
period (a formal retention period not available, then, we'll say its "useful
life").

I'm not having much luck, and am wondering if anyone on the list has come
across any study or knows of any industry standard estimate of what % of
structured data might be retained past its retention period or useful life.

In the meantime, I'll keep on looking.

Thanks,
