Glen,
One thing we're doing is changing the Records Dept staff from paper filers to document retention/destruction activities. With 167,000 boxes in storage to review with our clients for return to the client or disposal, this should keep them busy for the next 6 or 7 years.

What I'm doing personally is getting more into risk management activities, like legal holds, ethical walls, watch list monitoring, etc. I'm also doing more to get the word out to decision makers that just because information is electronic, doesn't mean that it doesn't need to be managed.

In addition, we are now starting to train the staff outside of Records more extensively than in the past on how to file, since they are now profiling and indexing documents in the DMS as records. For us our DMS has become not only our document production database, but also our electronic document repository, since you can declare any document in the DMS as a record.

I do expect that my staff may shrink in the next 3 years, but not by much. When I retire in 7 or so years I expect the staffing to be much less. They also could be distributed throughout the firm, rather than in a centralized space.

I'm hoping you intended to say, "shed employees and not "shred employees" but it did make me smile for a moment.
