You might want to check out this slideshow from Yahoo News.  The photos are beautiful and each library deserves a visit. One of the photos is the replacement to the Library of Alexandria sacked and burned back in the (really) old days. 

The Library of Alexandria  would be my suggestion for the greatest archive of all time. While both (old and new) are called a library, I think both qualify as a archives.  The old library contained information on the (then) ancient world of lost societies and civilizations which surely meets the  definition of an archives. The good news is that much of its contents were saved, albeit, looted and relocated to other parts of the world. Secret rooms that survived the fire were found as recently as the 1970's and their contents made available to scholars. The description of the  new library (below) says enough on why is it an archive instead of just a library.
