Hello my esteemed colleagues.

A question has arisen at work regarding retention periods. First a little background: When the current incarnation program was started, it was decided that time retention periods for official records would be 3 years and up. The reasoning behind this was 1.) to limit the number of time retention periods to whole years (easier to implement) and 2.) align the operational records categories to our regulated records categories which had a retention of 3 years or longer. Event retentions are a different animal altogether and don't pertain to this question. Recently we have had a few business units ask why and if they can have shorter retention periods.

My question to you is - does your program limit the number of retention periods (time only ) to a certain few? What is your lowest timed retention period? Do you have retention periods in days, months and years or just years? (Our backup tapes are the only items that have a retention period in days).

Thank you for your help in advance.

Regards,

~Meg
