It's "on us" to justify and prove the value of attending conferences to our employers...I've gone to over 22 ARMA conferences, many on my own dime, which is quite significant considering my location and proximity to conference sites. However, I've always targeted specific objectives whenever I attend a conference, whether it is networking, scouring the Expo, ARMA leadership, or attending sessions. After conference, I'm always set to demonstrate to my company what I gained by attending and have launched initiatives accordingly. We are all responsible for "bringing home the bacon" if we are asking our employers to support our attendance at conference...

We have to do better at answering that question and making sure that those organizations understand and agree with that value proposition. If the value is there it doesn't matter where the venue is, they will send us...and the reverse is also true.
