In 1967 our neighbor ran the new computer lab at my college, and he was very
enthusiastic about the possibilities of computers. I was curious so I took a
course and the neighbor told me that it was the first one they'd taught using
punch cards instead of changing the wiring on motherboards. I don't remember
the language or the brand of computer. I wrote a program to reproduce a
simple design, a square within a square, and I remember struggling and
punching and re-punching cards to get myself out of an infinite loop which
turned out to be because of missing punctuation.

Eventually in the 80's I learned COBOL and worked on a bunch of ancient
machines from IBM-360s to Univac to Burroughs to Motorola and so forth. That
was when computer knowledge was proprietary. Now you can find answers to most
computer problems by asking questions in google or any other search engine.
