I find this whole conversation very interesting when I think about the implications of someone's personal life impinging upon their work life.
Sure, what's out there on the internet isn't private ... but it can be considered personal, and perhaps beyond what should be policed by one's employer. True, the realities of the world are that perhaps the business need be concerned, particularly if the individual's content is attributed to them by name and references their workplace. But on the other hand, if they're writing anonymously, or not about the business ... well, it gets strange: how do we / should we as a society allow people the freedom from institutional oversight in their private lives?
Is it ethical (or even legal) to examine someone's content in this manner?

As to firing someone for using social media, well, that's about like firing someone for having a few drinks after work, I'd say. Neither action is particularly smart, perhaps, but both activities legal, both lead to people saying stupid things, and both are societally accepted.

p.s. Note the "social" credentials below: no FaceHook, but LinkedIn is used / expected, as is StackOverflow to some degree (in my line of work). Do I use them for social interaction? No. They're merely online representations of my experience and activities, for the purposes of providing biographical information to prospective employers.
