My first exposure to records work was as a temporary employee at Armco
Inc. in Middletown, Ohio in 1989, right out of college. I was tasked with
scrolling through microfilm reels of coal miners' employment records and
noting the start and end positions of each file. I was fascinated with the
files. When I was finished with that job they had me cutting microfilm and
stuffing it into jackets. Not as interesting, but the micrographics
supervisor played 1940s music and it was a fun time. Just observing what
the records management department did there got me hooked. I've strayed a
couple of times but have always returned to the field.
