Sort of a tangent, but as a Records Manager I've certainly found keeping
up with technology a very important aspect of being able to create value
for my employers. However, I've also found the knowledge of "legacy"
technology to be of benefit - even - dare I say it - micrographics. Many
of us work for Company's and institutions that have been around for
decades if not centuries, and often there are legacy files, that are
required to be retained, but never made it to the point of conversion to
the latest technology.

This is anecdotal on my part, but I was glad to have some background that
made sure I know what film stocks shouldn't be stored together, or might
violently combust. You never know what someone might find in a forgotten
storeroom or cabinet somewhere. At a minimum I think we should be able to
recognize old mediums and have a general knowledge of what some of their
main issues might be in preservation and access. But yeah, I probably
don't need to know the difference between a deep tank and roller transport
processor.
