The tendency of information technology to conflate data found in databases,
termed "structured data," and documents, termed "unstructured data," also
conflates how we manage these categories for risk and value. The current
focus for risk is documents in litigation. The current focus for value is
structured data in "big data." These two very different types of information
require diverse methods of management that do not merge in very many places.
Organizations that conflate the two do a disservice to Records Management,
those with expertise in documents, and Data Science, those with expertise in
structured data. They also do a disservice to the attorneys they represent,
who are drowning in irrelevant documents whenever litigation arises
