Lacking special adaptation, email clients are not good records repositories. Managing records in off-the-shelf email boxes is labor intensive and, hence, impractical in most cases.
Consider email as a paper envelope. In most cases, we discard the envelope and move the physical contents to an appropriate file. The same goes for email: drop the "envelope" and put the message in a digital file where it can be assigned a retention series, retained appropriately, and disposed on time.
