I think businesses believe that an archivist wants to keep everything, and
that a corporate archives is a big pile of risk and unnecessary expense.
And the opposite is true. No archivist that I've ever met (and I used to
be one), wants to keep everything. They target what is valuable to their
organization in a Collections Policy, and they, as much as anyone, want to
get rid of the chaff.
Businesses would do well to consider an archives not so much as a
repository, but a process. That process culls business records and
information for items of long-term, historical, and legal value to the
organization. Oftentimes that value includes establishing or proving a
legal right of the organization. Viewed as a process that reduces risk
rather than increases it, perhaps more businesses would have corporate
archives.
