While not an inexpensive option, this is one of the best options I've ever
used for safe and secure storage of maps and large format materials.

Maps/drawings are allowed to be stored "flat" in press board file folders
that are stored upright in a compression system that keeps them from
sliding down and being damaged in the cabinets. The files themselves can
be locked and then sealed on 6 sides, and they are water and fire
resistant. If the room they are in doesn't have a floor drain and water
collects on the floor, eventually the files become buoyant and if they tip,
the way they're designed, water doesn't enter the tops of the files.
