My episode was in the past year. I will say that I have had checks I've issued questioned by the bank this past year because my signature has changed due to arthritis and shoulder surgery. However, I agree that some banks do not check. That does not release us from signing them though. I don't know of any merchant that would accept an unsigned check.

My bank also caught a forger in a similar episode. But that was 30 years ago. I wonder if my current signature (scribble) bears much resemblance to the one on file at the bank. I agree about the legal role of ink signatures, but there are holes in the logic.
