I've had tremendous success with ARMA's Information Governance Maturity Model, but then, that is with organizations that have already determined something is not going as desired and they were ready to hire someone to tell them what to do. Within five minutes they love it because they can see where they need to go and have some idea how to do it. This may sound insane for a consultant, but my greatest joy is when, halfway through the project when we've gathered basic information and analyzed it, the organization says they know what to do and want me in the background while they do the work--they are owning the problems and the solutions, and ARMA's IGMM helps them do that. It also helps the records managers I work with see where their skills and knowledge gaps are.

I think that like any big picture issue, trying to boil it down to a sentence or two is a good exercise, but the results will always miss the mark. For each organization, Information Governance will be something a bit different. For each records manager, the skills and knowledge gap between where they are now and where they want to be to ensure their organization's information is truly an asset and that identifiable risks are mitigated, will also be different. Vendors and IT consultants will always weigh in and try to turn ideas into a toaster that only they can sell. They are like the poor, they will be with you always.

My elevator speech to executives and lawyers is that I help organizations manage information to ensure they get full value from it and to ensure they are not hit with needless risks.

Best wishes,
Carol
