Moving Day for the Declaration and Other Charters - NYTimes.com

In the mid-1930s, President Franklin Roosevelt had chosen the newly built
Archives building, with its capacious, stately rotunda, as the permanent
home of the charters. But only after an 18-year bureaucratic haggle between
the Archives and the Library was settled did those crates finally start
their journey down the hill from the U.S. Capitol.

When the treasures were unveiled that December, President Harry Truman
declared: “We are enshrining these documents for future ages. ….This
magnificent hall has been constructed to exhibit them, and the vault
beneath, that we have built to protect them, is as safe from destruction as
anything the wit of modern man can devise.”
