new findings by the Ponemon Institute indicate that more than one-fourth of
firms' applications are being used without the permission or knowledge of
IT departments. Additionally, about half of the IT professionals
interviewed said they do not have clear visibility into how employees are
using file sharing or file sync-and-share apps.

The survey also found that half of the IT leaders surveyed said "they are
themselves part of the problem, admitting they engage in fundamentally poor
behavior, and have failed to set up corporate policies or assign
accountability for data loss." Even when protocols were in place, more than
60 percent of respondents failed to delete confidential documents as
defined by current policies, and some files were forwarded to unauthorized
people as well. Half of respondents admitted that 50 percent of their
organization's documents are considered sensitive or confidential, yet they
are often exchanged with third parties.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
