I'm glad the three of you feel you're getting enough from it to remain
members... 27 years was more than enough for me. I left three times, came
back twice... but I'm done for good this time.
YES... the ISGs were da BOMB for content and collaboration. Best value for
the buck without a doubt... the IACs were a mere shadow of the
predecessors, but STILL provided the opportunity to interact with others of
your own kind. Too bad they were both seen as a (financial) threat to the
larger association.
And the Region conferences have also been strong sources of valuable
exchange.. and it wasn't uncommon to see splinter meetings at these based
on functional/industry areas of common ground.
But Steve's two questions are similar to what started this discourse:
What is the REASON for the association?
Why do (we) have members?
It's not an issue for me any longer, I don't spend my organization's or
invest my own money on it, and although I can't count the hours I spent
volunteering at the local, regional and national levels, that's over too.
I found Judy Tyler's comment interesting, when she said:
"Volunteer leaders were also hard to come by."
They were only hard to come by because in many cases they were disrespected
and never recognized- they were instead seen as a threat in some cases.
That type of situation certainly doesn't encourage people to pony up.
