The bipartisan opposition to the proposal may derail the CIA’s plans for
the eventual elimination of email of all but the highest ranking 22 CIA
officials, a move that comes at a time when the Obama administration has
been vowing greater transparency by intelligence agencies.
The CIA’s email plans were tentatively approved in August by the U.S.
National Archives and Records Administration, which oversees U.S.
government document-retention policies. It spent nearly seven months
evaluating the proposal.
