Thirty-six years ago, Susan Vande Kamp walked into the Story County
Recorders Office as a temporary worker, who within a very short period of
time would find herself running for the position of Story County Recorder.
And once elected, the 1968 graduate of Nevada High School would set up shop
and survive eight elections β€” with opposition running against her in three
of those.

β€œIt was always stressful to think I might have to go job hunting after the
election,” said Vande Kamp, 65, who will celebrate the holidays and the end
of a long and successful career in county government in the next couple
weeks.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
