So yes your young attorney friend is correct in saying that an R&IM professional does not have the credentials to legally define the difference between what is considered a "record" and what is "information". As others have said the key word is "legally" and yes we are not licensed to practice law, etc....
At least he acknowledged that you are an R&IM professional. And you are!
Clients like these are always a challenge. They are also those that can become your best ally. He obviously has an opinion and perhaps even cares. That's cool.
Do your research and cite your legal sources. Open a non-combative discussion and hammer out whatever definition suites your business.
