First job-like thing (read: unpaid opportunity): intern at a now-infamous
Congressman's district office. Lesson: people will be mean to you for no
reason but you just gotta take it. Also, don't hold politicians in high
esteem, although I learned that later.

First actual job: statistical assistant at a state-level lobbying group.
Lesson: don't hold out on a job because the organization has values that
run counter to your own.
