Dear colleagues,

Stephen asked "... what level of detail is recommended as proof of
destruction at the document level? What pieces of metadata should be
retained, if any, for auditing/reporting purposes?"

In my opinion, you should ask yourself: which metadata remain for the paper
records of the same kind? Do you really need more? Metadata are
discoverable, and too much metadata may disclose sensitive or confidential
information.

Mary Binkholder asked ". How do you "destroy" electronic records?"

IMHO You should really destroy the data (preferably according to NIST
recommendations,
http://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/SpecialPublications/NIST.SP.800-88r1.pdf )
at least by re-writing them AND destroy/rewrite all the corresponding
back-ups AND do you best to destroy all the uncontrolled copies :)

With my best regards,
Natasha Khramtsovsky
