After reading a book referencing the case, former Smith County Assistant
District Attorney Stan Springerley began his search, with the help of
Records Director Joseph Settanni, to see if the original case files were
still stowed away in the Cotton Belt Building.

“It was very exciting when I came across the first original signature of
Thurgood Marshall, along with the other civil rights attorneys of the era,”
Springerley said.

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A historical find among the Smith County courthouse judicial records may
soon be shipped to Houston.

Court filings from 1956 that mark legal icon Justice Thurgood Marshall's
presence in East Texas are being preserved by the Smith County
Commissioner's Court.
