So, likely you update your Records Retention Schedule periodically. And
possibly, (and quite separately) in your records destruction procedure
you send a list of destruction-eligible boxes to the boxes' owners so they
have an opportunity to put select boxes on "hold" for litigation or other
legitimate reasons (that you've spelled out in your destruction
procedure).
Here's the scenario: What if some boxes are exceptioned from destruction,
legal hold or other, and by the time they are released from hold, the
retention period for the record series they belonged to has been
lengthened. Do you proceed with destruction under the old retention period
(in place for the original destruction-eligible list they were on), or do
you now keep them for the new retention period?
And if you (hopefully) post an answer, tell us if this scenario is
actually written into your destruction procedure so that you are
consistent?
Thanks for any insight and real world answers,
Gary
