*(LOS ANGELES)* Whether the city has acted illegally for years by allowing
elected officials to destroy public records is unclear, according to the
First Amendment Coalition.

According to the non-profit’s Executive Director Peter Scheer, the law
regarding public document destruction is “murky” because government
officials may unknowingly destroy public records all the time, like in the
case of emails. Additionally, he said the California law is ambiguous
regarding elected officials as it only states that no public documents can
be destroyed that are less than two years by officials of city departments.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
