Dear Peter,

I am with ARMA for a rather long time. Either during that period I became too knowledgeable for my own good (I sincerely doubt that), or ARMA as a source of information became less relevant. Ten years ago, any issue of IMJ was precious to me, but nowadays I rarely find articles that are worth reading. Ten years ago, ARMA was a leader in standardization in the field – vital word is “was”… Ten years ago, the membership dues were a huge sum for a poor Russian girl, but I gladly paid them because the return on this investment (both in terms of knowledge and respect) was awesome. Now it feels like charity…

Your own Rain is one of the few remnants of those glorious times (and I am grateful for your long haul work, few are capable of such an effort).

It seems to me that ARMA is stuck with thingies like GARP (which are, in the words of one Voice coaches, “consistent, but not outstanding”), - and is paying little attention to the new winds. Do you think that digital revolution is mostly over? No, it is just starting to unfold, with new huge RM challenges waiting ahead :) Does ARMA see these challenges?

In general, it feels like outgoing generation of RM pioneers & gurus is being replaced with generation of average “information governors” (which don’t see themselves as RMs, and are not accepted by IT people as their own :) – who are they, really?).

With my regards and best wishes to you,
Natasha

Subject: As AIIM Withers, Will ARMA Be Its White Knight?

Compare AIIM's path to that of Kansas-based ARMA, the records management association and AIIM's closest competitor. ARMA has had its struggles, but has maintained a healthy and enthusiastic chapter network, continued its annual trade show, created the first IG Professional certification credential (which is not so easy to obtain, and it certainly requires diligent study) and continues to expand its educational offerings with the spring Executive Conference on IG and other options.
