Reading about a crash losing massive amounts of files and the next story of someone digitizing massive amounts of old files seem to repeat past stories.

At a National Laboratory, they tried to digitize files and because of one error in filling in the file protocol, all of the overly large files were just eliminated. This brought into question the accuracy of the whole system. Once management loses confidence in the file accuracy, the entire system is called into question.

Due to the errors programmed into the system, it created crashes. Imagine digitizing 400,000 files and then all of the work is lost by a systems crash?

If you stay on this List long enough you see the future catastrophic event play out because they never ask the important questions in advance.

What possible use could they have for records on inmates that would be in their 100’s?
Is having inmates help you image files that include PII a worthwhile risk?
What potential value could these records have?
Is the five year imaging program worth this investment?
How will this information that is now being placed in a searchable format scheduled to be used?

It seems the stories never contain the real story.
