While answering a researcher's question about whether or not one of my
religious community members were buried in a certain cemetery, I realized
that I don't have an official copy of re-internment (reburial) records from
1982. At that time, 200 or so of my Sisters were disinterred from a
Westchester Co cemetery, and re-interred in a Staten Island/Richmond Co
cemetery. Any official documents that the cemetery might have had regarding
this did not survive. The Sisters' death certificates won't help, because
they won't capture the re-internment.

I have read that the undertaker handling the transfer of burial would have
had to file for a permit with the "registrar of the district" where the
re-internment occurred. In my case, the undertaker filed his permit with
the Town of Greenburgh, of Richmond Co Staten Island. They Town of
Greenburgh doesn't have a copy, because they don't handle this sort of
thing. Would anyone know if the NYS Dept of Health would be the repository
for this, and if they were, what the retention period would be? Does anyone
know the correct NYS Government Dept I should contact regarding this?
