Paula,

Are you talking about
hot site
warm site
cold site backup?

ideally you can locate a similar (non comtetitive) org that can house your
backups. The advantage is. in the event of a catastrophic disaster, you can
recover. By similar, i mean in yor industry and running the same types of
harware/software. If you are only talking cold site, the rule I followed is
an hour away for the complete backups and local bank vault for the
differentials. It is better if you can store your complete backups in a
diffrent fault area, not down wind from you in the fire range, or downstream
from you. We always try to make sure the same disaster doesn't get all of
our stuff. :)

Subject: [RM] FW: How far away is far enough for off-site storage?

I am working with our IT department in locating off-site storage for our
computer back-up tapes. Is there any standard of what is a minimum
recommended distance? We are looking at a facility that is
approximately 3 miles from our campus and are wondering if this is far
enough. We are currently storing them in a maintenance building next to
our office, so just about any real distance would be better than what we
have now! Thank you for your input.
