Actually, I was thinking of recording data on microfilm instead of 
magnetic media or CD/DVD-type media.
The data might be encoded using any of the many matrix codes /2-D barcodes 
available, some of which are discussen on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcode 

The data density? I dunno. 
This would certainly duck the issue of media longevity. it would not, 
however, alleviate the issue of data formats and playback software.

The thought was prompted by the previous question regarding conversion 
between microfilm and electronic formats.
