Or the Accounting field and CPA's. Do you think some of the issues we are facing in the records managment field are because RM doesn't have a university level degree program?
   
  Smaller organization use bookkeepers with limited knowledge to do the daily work, but have an accountant for audit, review and  tax issues. 
   
  Is RM at a crossroads where this level of professionalism is required in order to be taken seriously? And provide the level of expertise their organizations need.

What we are seeing in RIM happens in many professions. Let's take the medical profession... at one time, we had the GP... it is getting to the point where we now have eye, ear, nose, throat and belly button consultants;)...

I see similar things going on with us. Just take a look at our own Listserve members. After all, isn't that why we belong? I don't think that any of us is an expert at everything. And on top of that, there are so many opinions on a "same topic" that we still have to sort out what is best for our own situation.
