Laura,

For light use tracking assets or small storeroom inventories, I recommend Wasp Technologies "Wasp Nest". You can get their inventory tracking software, their asset management software, a labeler and a great scanner for a good price. 

 My company has provided barcode tracking solutions for years. We have found the Wasp Nest to be a really fast, simple, inexpensive way to get started using barcodes.
