There's also Acronym Finder (at http://www.acronymfinder.com/) which includes the definitions for "TLA" and "XTLA" (Silmaril doesn't cover the latter). What are these, you ask? Well, during the 70's, so many new terms were being coined as a result of the technology revolution that people began resorting to using acronyms to speed communication (sound familiar?), and acronym usage became au courant. Back then, IBM (the computer behemoth of the day) was particularly fond of using three-letter acronyms for their products, and the industry jokingly coined the acronym (or meta-acronym?) "TLA" for "three-letter acronym". As IBM revised and updated a product, rather than create a new name, they would just add a letter to the existing three-letter acronym. The industry poked fun at how IBM was so set in its ways that instead of developing a four-letter acronym, they had to resort to an "extended three-letter acronym" or "XTLA".
