Hi Brian,
My quick responses as follow:
- Optical jukeboxes are not quite obsolete - yet. I'd argue, however, that
the older MO- and WORM drive-based jukeboxes are on the way out, to be
replaced by blue-laser-based storage like Plasmon's Ultra Dense Optical
(UDO) and eventually HD-DVD and BluRay Disc (BRD). CD, too, is on the slide,
because of the massive amounts of information to be stored, but DVD still
has a few years left in it.
- While the EMC Centera is the most well known content addressable storage
system, and has been accredited by the SEC as meeting its WORM requirements,
there are similar technologies from a number of vendors including Network
Appliance's SnapLock. The challenge you face with those is that today they
still use proprietary algorithms and storage approaches. There is a nascent
movement to standardize data access between CAS systems - you can find some
additional information at http://www.cascommunity.org - but we ain't there
yet.
Cheers,

Subject: [RM] Optical Storage Devices
Aloha All,
I've heard that HP is no longer distributing/selling their Surestore
series of optical jukeboxes...
I'm wondering whether optical jukeboxes are becoming obsolete as media
storage devices...If so, what are the logical replacements which meet
WORM considerations. Is Centera the only potential solution/replacement
storage media that meets WORM requirements?
Migration, Purging and destruction considerations for imaged documents
are also a major consideration in storage devices...
I'd be interested to hear if any of you are looking at migrating imaged
documents from Optical Jukeboxes and if so, to what???
Mahalo!
